Our work in Kenya is focused on empowering vulnerable children and youth by providing opportunities for education and improved literacy.
Literacy and access to information is a key determinant of a society’s social and economic development and, the impact of education on an individual’s economic independence is undisputed. Yet, most children in rural Kenya are missing the opportunity to gain a quality education due to lack of adequate access to educational resources and, financial lack. While most parents acknowledge the value of education, the resources necessary to provide this for their children is often out of reach. Many families cannot afford basic needs, much less the educational requirements for their children. Access to learning opportunities in these low income communities is thus often hampered by lack of tuition fees, school uniform, books and related learning materials, as well as hunger and a poor home environment.
Lister, our president, was born and raised in one such community in the Kisii area in Southwestern Kenya, a place that remains dear to her heart. She has experienced first hand the value of education and knows well that the best chance for her community to break out of the cycle of poverty is through education. She understands she is a product of a quality education and has a passion to see the rest of her community achieve the same.
Our mission in Kenya is to help close the gap in accessing education for these vulnerable populations by providing Educational Scholarships to needy students and a Community Library and Information Resource Center to support literacy.
