Most children in rural Kenya do not have adequate access to books at school or at home. To help bridge the gap in accessing educational resources, we are building a Community Library and Information Resource Center at Obwari Market, in Nyamira County. This is a rural community primarily comprised of peasant farmers with no piped water or gas. The education sector (teaching) provides the only form of formal employment for the community.
The Library will serve as a literacy support center, providing access to a wide range of fictional and informational content for students and the community from both local and global sources. A stock of local curriculum texts will ensure the children have supplemental access to textbooks outside the classroom with a “Homework Hotline” for remedial student tutoring and to assist students with homework as necessary.
The only one of its kind in the region, the center will serve as a hub for information access and computer technology, bringing the world to the community. The center will also feature age appropriate activities to engage the younger learners.
With your help, we can help these children discover books at a young age and support them in developing a life-long love for reading and learning. We can also ensure they have a conducive space to do their homework and study for exams while providing this community access to the information they need to enrich and improve their own lives.
Construction of the library started in September 2021 and is on going.
